It will now be returned to Berlin, having been on display in Kaunas since February 16 as the Lithuania city held the title of the European Capital of Culture this year.

The original Act of Lithuania's Independence, was sent to Germany, was found in the political archives of the German Foreign Ministry by Lithuanian Professor Liudas Mazylis from Vytautas Magnus University in March, 2017.

Under an agreement between the German Federal Archives and the Lithuanian State Historical Archives, the document was handed over to Lithuania for display for a maximum of five years.

This is the only known original of the Act of February 16.

Featuring the original signatures of the signatories, the document is the authentic birth certificate of the State of Lithuania.
