Automatic self-boarding gates will be installed at Vilnius Airports early next year, and the airport hopes the novelty will help to step up passenger flows once they return to post-crisis levels.

"This technology will welcome passengers way before they get into the aviation safety check zone – the area where passengers and they hand luggage undergo checks. Now this function is performed by aviation safety specialists. Once this system is installed, passenger flows will be increased during the check stage and it will also improve passengers' satisfaction," Laura Joffe, COO at Vilniaus Oro Uostai (Vilnius Airports), the airport operator in Lithuania, told BNS.

Lithuania's NT Service and Germany's Magnetic Autocontrol will carry out the installation work for 249,000 euros, including VAT. The contract was signed earlier this month.

"This technology is widely used by airports of other countries. We can find ti in London, Amsterdam, Vienna, and major German airports," she said.

Vilnius Airport also plans to expand self-service services for passengers over the next three years.
