After the independence, in 1992, the formation of one of the most specialized and secretive Lithuanian military squadrons was initiated. Today this squadron is known as the Combat Divers Service, one of the three squadrons forming the Lithuanian Special Operation Force (LITHSOF).

The primary tasks of the Combat Divers are: special reconnaissance (SR), direct action (DA), naval boarding, capture and arrest, escort and military assistance (MA). Combat Divers successfully operates both in water and on land. They have also mastered a variety of air infiltration techniques.

Nowadays the Combat Divers Service is one of the most elite squadrons of the Lithuanian military – armed with modern weaponry and accoutrement as well as advanced machinery. Combat Divers are constantly training in Lithuania and foreign countries, cooperate with NATO partners, and participate in international missions as part of the Special Operation Force.
